289 Engines 

Question: [HD] "Had a conversation with a guy that owns a original 1967 Mustang GT350. He was told that knowledgeable Ford folks can tell a 289 K block from a standard 289 block. This is without tearing the block down - just by looking at the engine installed in the car.
Anyone have any ideas about this?"

Responses:

[RF] "The casting numbers will be:
C3OE-B
C4OE-B or
C5AE-E
The first two have 5 bolt bellhousings and the last a 6 bolt."

[TN] "Another clue is the harmonic balancer which is 2-3 times as wide."

[BS] "Engine block casting codes will be different, harmonic balancer is thicker(to the tune of being roughly 3.5 inches thick), the rest could be a straight bolt on, such as the HiPo valvetrain(solid lifters and such), Tri-Y headers(a popular upgrade), and the intake/carb and alternator pulley set up. Truth be told, I have seen several "All original", "K" code Mustangs with the wrong block in them at shows."
