Fuel Regulator Issues:
Question: [Le] "I'm looking for
advice on how to hook up a Summit (really Holley) fuel reg. to a std
gas tank/pump. The fuel reg has threads, and the tank requires a
hose clamped on. What is the best thing I can do to avoid
fabricating anything? The fuel reg is the adjustable type with two
outlets, one inlet, all threaded."
Answers:
[DW] "Most any automotive parts place
will have hose barb adaptors. Pipe threads on one end and a hose
barb on the other end. NAPA, Autozone, and CarQuest has 'em I know.
"
[Mi] "Also, try your local hardware
store...parts could be cheaper."
Question: Why can't the fuel vapor
canister be mounted in the rear of the car?
Comments:
[PM] "Why can't the canister be
eliminated?"
[RT] "It can be eliminated, but I kept
mine. Just doing my bit to help clean the environment."
[WP] "think everyone needs the vapor
canister mounted near the rear"
[PM] "I'm pretty sure that if you mount
it in the rear you still need to run a vacuum line from the engine
to the canister to make it work properly so your going to have run a
line the length of the car anyway....I eliminated mine"
[AM] "If memory serves right, the line
between the canister and engine has a solenoid that opens on startup
to burn any remnant vapors left in the canister. During normal
operation, it simply acts as a filter. No performance degradation
will be created with removal."
[ce] "IF you mount the charcoal canister in
the rear you would need to run a vacuum line all the way to the
solenoid for it to work right. It may be just too long a run for it
to function correctly. The system works like this: purge valve on
fuel tank vents excess vapor to charcoal canister. There is a vacuum
line from the engine to the canister with a solenoid in line. The
solenoid is controlled by the EEC-IV. When the engine starts the
solenoid is opened to purge the vapor and burn it in the engine.
Use the canister, it will help reduce the
chance of smelling fuel around the vehicle. And it's the right way
to install the fuel system."
[EG] "The 12 circuit PAINLESS WIRING
HARNESS supplied with my FFR does not come with a Fuel Pump
circuit. What circuit are most using. Are most folks putting a relay
in to handle the fuel pump?"
[5.0] "I used the dome light circuit to
power the fuel pump relay...works great!"
[WP] "Use the stock inertial switch, run
a lead from the pink ignition wire(PL) to the inertial switch and
then to the relay coil. Ground the other side of the relay coil. Run
a fused 12V battery to the relay input and the output goes to the
fuel pump.
I used a ground at each corner for the lights, and one for the dash
harness."
[j] "The harness does not come w/ a fuel
pump circuit. You will need to add a switch to the dash w/ a relay
and at least a 12ga. wire running to the pump. You could use the
white wire(dome light) in the harness but it will fail to supply the
pump with enough power, after time the pump or the wire will fail."
[b] "If you're not installing a radio, then
just use the "switched" radio circuit. This way the pump
will only run when the ignition switch is on."
[jk] "Oh yeah, you still need to use a
relay, just use the radio wire to trigger it, and run a
"hot" wire from the battery to the relay so you don't
overload the radio circuit."
