[1225] "The 289s from 63 to 67 have
combustion chamber volumes of 54.5 cc and intake/exhaust 1.67/1.45,
casting #s C3AE-F to C7ZE-A.
The HP289 has 1.78/1.45 from 64 to 67 C4OE-B
to C5AE-E The Hypos also have screw-in studs and integral valve
spring cups. That's why they can hang out at 7000 rpms. Better for
open trackers than show.
These heads may not work well on a 347 stroker.
They won a lot of races and have historic significance."
[AC] "The older 351W, 302 and 289 heads
with 58cc or smaller chambers shroud the valves too much. Even
though the HO head chambers are rated at 64cc, the chamber shape and
the less shrouding of the valves promote better combustion
efficiency. Go with the HO."
[1775] Question: "My
351W crate motor has about 2200 miles in one season. I am pulling
off the heads today for a mild porting. Should I replace the head
bolts I remove with ARP's ? I understand they may have stretched and
may not TQ down properly."
Answers:
[WU] "I've used the ARP and the standard
torque to yield Felpro head bolts. The ARP's had smaller heads and
it was more difficult to keep the socket of the torque wrench on
them securely, during the final torque sequence. Unless your motor
is blown or nitrous, the Felpro or FMS bolts are fine, cost less,
and are easier to use IMO. You can get graphite head gaskets with
the bolts as a kit quite reasonably too."
[MR] Since you're going to all that effort why
not replace the heads themselves along with the bolts! You know you
are going to go there eventually anyway."
[MD] "did you decide to port-polish them
yourself? I got mine back together a few days ago they should really
flow now, I can't wait to get to go out for a test run. If you do
the work yourself it is very time consuming, I spent several days on
and off working on them. Hopefully this will satisfy my crave for
more power at least until I find a donor 351 and move up to the kind
of power you have."
[1775] "I planned to port
them myself. I read every article available. Then I pulled them off
and really looked inside. I realized I could mess them up ! Actually
the intake chamber did not look so bad on my GT40 heads. They are
aluminum so easy metal there. I just figured I will gain more doing
the big work and leaving the porting to a reputable shop. I got cold
feet !! Saw fingers shakin at me !!"
[AL] "I used ARP studs. Studs
"stretch" more uniformly than a bolt. Bolts can tend to
torque (twist) during the torquing sequence. I won't reuse a bolt
but might reuse a stud. Bolts are fine for no SC applications, but
in SC applications I would recommend studs. Cost increase is
minimum. I'm not SC yet but figured since I was putting new heads on
I went with the studs in case I wanted SC later. Here's what I
used....
ARP 154-4005 Ford 289-302 w/351 heads, head
stud kit with/nuts & washers 190,000 psi.
Hope this helps."
