Painless Wiring Harness

Question: [Ol] "What kind of dimmer switch did you use?

I have the North Cobra's turn signal kit so I was thinking of using that. But isn't that switch on the stalk a momentary contact switch? How would that keep the high beams on?"

Answers:

[MW] "I used the old type that sits on the floor. Autozone...about $7.00"

[1775] "I used a toggle switch."

[RO] "The switch on the stalk has to be used in conjunction with a relay. The momentary contact trips the relay. The switch on the dash is easier or the floor mount. We do mostly the floor mount, it feels natural."

[d55] "the Painless Kit was very simple to wire hi and lo. I just used a on-on toggle switch mounted in dash, with my blue button light above it. You can use a generic push button for the floor too. I thought of that, but I couldn't figure out a good place to put it and have easy access to it."

[WL] "For the sake of diversity, I will tell you that I wired-up the circuit with the relays on FFR #2084K to use the momentary stalk switch. For me, that was easier than rigging up the brackets and stuff for a floor switch.

An added benefit of this route is that you get a cool 'flash to pass' feature.

In order to make it work, you need a generic relay and a special one designed for this purpose. Most people use one from a VW. The wiring diagram for this has been posted in the past. Russ sent me a wiring diagram along with the custom set-up that he built for me."

[CD] "I used a floor mount dimmer switch that I mounted behind the dash with a push button mounted in front, works great."

[JP] "There are some "latching" relays available that would make the momentary turn signal stalk switch work. Should be a very simple wiring job. I'm sure Wayne would have these available."

[WP] "It's a VW part, about $25 at your local dealer."

[D55] "He not only used a foot button, but also mounted it behind the dash! Now, if he could only figure a way to get his foot up under the dash to switch from hi to low, he'll have it licked!!!"

Question: [ka] "I am having problems with the wiring for the hazard hookups on the Painless wiring system. There is a brown wire #951 (power) coming from the fuse block that I hooked to the hazard switch. The switch then has another wire coming from it that I grounded. Very simple (so I thought). Every time I switch the hazard switch to 'On' the fuse box clicks and then blows a fuse.
I can't find any documentation in the harness manual for the hazard hookups.
Anyone else have problems like this?
Thanks in advance..."

Comments:

[pi] "don't have any direct knowledge of what you are dealing with, but it sounds like you should not be grounding that other wire. The switch controls the power feed to the hazard relay, so the wiring would normally be from the fuse block to the switch to the relay to ground. The relay becomes the load. The way you are doing ti, it sounds like you are just shorting out the circuit by bypassing the load. Just my guess from the darkness."

[WP] "One side of the switch has ground and the other side has power? Your switch is wired to a direct short. It should go from fusebox to switch input, switch output to lights, lights to ground."

[EE] "You should have a wire with constant power for the hazard switch. This sounds like the one from the fuse block....
The other wire from the switch should feed power to the hazard relay terminal. The other "coil" terminal on the relay should go to ground.
Then the other two terminals on the relay should go to the flasher and the other to all four turn signal lamps.

The "CLICK" you are hearing in the fuse block most likely is the fuse blowing....

The reason you are blowing the fuse is because you are grounding the second wire of the switch. Unless the switch is of the illumination type, there should only be two wires. If there are three, one of them should be ground, the other routes to the relay.
To sort out which one, find which wire has power when the switch is turned on."

[351] "I had the exaxct same issue when the wire is shorted to ground you hear the blinker click then the fuse blows. What I did was wired this wire to the parking lights front and rear and put a switch in series. When the switch is on the 2 front and 2 back parking lights blink. I could not figure out how to make this work with the rear direction signal lights without screwing up the direction signal lights. but the front and rear of the car blink when the flasher switch is thrown which is the desired result."
