Flaming River Installation Questions:
Question: [BC] "I'm installing a
Flaming River (18-1) rack and offset urethane bushings. I have the
the rack positioned as low as possible in the frame using the offset
bushings. The angles of the tie rod and lower control arm are very
close. FFR says to use the same amount of washers front and rear
between frame and rack. It seems to me that if you locate the rack
as far back as possible (all spacers in front of rack) that
everything seems to line up straighter with less angle when turning.
Has anybody done this or am I asking for trouble."
Answers:
[Mi] "I placed my rack all the way back.
That combined with the offset bushings has eliminated almost all
bump steer."
[MDR] "I just moved my rack all the way
back also I even considered milling the rack but I would have to
remove it completely."
[SVO] "looked at mine when I installed
the offset bushings and moved it back with all the washers in front.
Good call. Bumpsteer should be pretty much eliminated."
Question: [TD] "I installed the
Flaming River 18-1 rack with the FFR bump-steer kit. With the tie
rod ends screwed all the way in rack rods are still too long. Before
I cut twice and measure once what is the best procedure for this
installation."
Comments:
[SVT] "an experienced builder told me
5/8" for FR rack and FFR bump steer."
Question: My Steering shaft is bent,
where can I buy one?
Answers:
[M3] "Mike Mack. Tristate Motorsports. www.tristatemotorsports.com"
[SVT] "mail ordered from http://www.breezepak.com
Mark also has many other parts for FFR builders."
[a66] "just installed my new steering
shaft last night from Tri-State. I also went with the Flaming River
rag joint eliminator as well.
All of it was well, well worth the money! I
really like the rag joint eliminator and would suggest it as well."
[RO] "Go with the breeze part,
inexpensive and nice. We use them as standard equipment."
[RS] "my '89 GT donor has a tilt wheel,
so would it be a better deal to skip the junkyard Olympics and just
order a column from on e of the sources mentioned here? If it's not
a big price difference It would make sense. Anybody know the cost of
a Mustang steering column from the junkyard?"
[RB] "Even with a junk yard steering
wheel you have to cut and weld it. These replacements are clean
neat. No welding needed."
[RT} "Does the replacement shaft go all
the way to the steering wheel or do you still use the mustang upper
piece?"
[MR] "the Breeze/Borgeson intermediate
shaft (and the Tri-states) replaces only the welded extended
Mustang/FFR piece. It must be used with either the Donor upper shaft
or our version of same. This maintains the collapsible
function."
[cd] "I am not using a donor. All I have
is the steering wheel. If I order a FR complete kit, the
intermediate shaft, and the upper shaft will I have everything I
need for the steering?"
[RB] "If the complete kit from FR
includes the rag joint replacement and short shafts then the only
parts you will need are the little clips that attach to the upper
steering shaft. They provide some "tightness" to the fit
of the shafts together.
The clips you can get from Ford."
