Went to Reno for the Air Races and.......

Went to the Reno Air Races this past week and this followed me home:

Looks good in the shop with the Cobra:

It'll look like this when I'm done:

Acrosport II: Open cockpit, 2 wings, just as flying was meant to be...

Picked it up from a friend that lost interest and now races jets at Reno.

If you've never been to the races, it's awesome!!

I've always been a fan of pylon racing but do they do that running jets? I thought just prop driven planes...? Gotta be a total rush to do too!

Don't tell my friend in Reno, but the jets are pretty boring. The unlimited props fly just as fast as the jets. The unlimiteds shake the ground, the jets sound like a quiet vacuum cleaner flying by.
Actually, they are all quite exciting to watch.

Awesome pics Doug, thanks for sharing. The races have been on my things to see list for a long time, and photos like that have just moved it up the list.

Is that a Steen Skybolt you picked up?

Good luck

Doug,

Great pictures! ...and congrats on the Acrosport! It looks like you have your work cut out for you. Are there wings yet?

I agree on Reno. If you like aircraft or racing (and better yet, both), you owe it to yourself to go one year. You really won't believe it.

I remember how amazed I was the first time I saw the prop planes going by right in front of me while 'significantly' ahead of their noise. (like jets.)

I went to OshKosh this year for the first time. It was awesome! Nemesis is seriously FAST!

For anyone who wants to see tons of Oshkosh pics, view my photobucket account here (There are 20 or 30 pages to look through):

http://s22.photobucket.com/albums/b3...anham/2008EAA/

There was an awesome yellow Stinson there, with great history. Apparently, some famous pilot flew that plane, and signed it's log book in the 40s or 50s; I don't remember his name.

What was really awesome was the Rocket Racing League's exhibition race. Those things are LOUD!!!! I don't know where they are going to race, but I've got to go see them. Here's a pic:

Awesome pics and a very nice new toy Doug! Did you just get the airframe or are the wings/tail included? What engine do you plan?

The tail feathers are a quick/easy build. I'll need to build the wings. Takes awhile to build all the ribs.
Hadn't decided on the engine yet. Would love to put a radial on it, http://www.rotecradialengines.com/0RotecR3600/R3600.htm, but will probably put an 0-360 on it.

Need to finish the Cobra first!

Looks like you had a great time.I always hear that it is. A Lance Air Legacy I painted a few years ago placed 2nd in class last year piloted by Skip Holmes. The name of it is Double Red with "N" numbers that when looked at spell nsane.I would post a pic if I knew how but look up "Fast Glass" and watch the movie trailer.

Is Skip in a Van's or a Lancair? I'm learing to identify aircraft, so be gentle.

By boss has a Van's RV-6A, and this looks similar, although his won't go anywhere near that speed.

The RV6 is another fine homebuilt:

Just as a side note, homebuilt/experimental aircraft make up a little over 20% of the General Aviation fleet these days.

Great pics Don. I had trouble getting my camera to autofocus on the Raptor inflight. Guess the stealth technology works!
And Rare Bare is my all time favorite. Don't know what happened on Sunday, the Bear didn't race, it was smoking a bit when landing on Saturday.

I have been a big fan of Rare Bear for a long time as well, it ran in the final on Sunday but was unable to finish. This photo is the last I saw of it:

Love it. I was there in 05' when the Bear won. Didn't run in 06' and I missed last year, another win for the Bear. Always a very competitive airplane.
I had to leave early on Sunday to get back home. Checked the results and saw that the Bear didn't place. I knew the smoke on Saturday was not gonna be good.
